City of Toronto recently approved a motion by Councillor Joe Cressy to ask the federal and provincial governments to ban the sale of handguns and ammunition in Toronto.

The motion came right after the tragic event of Danforth shooting where a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman were killed, and 13 people were wounded when a man open fire randomly on innocent civilians on Danforth Avenue in Toronto.

“It is quite obvious that this nothing more than an election campaign and a shameful motion on taxpayer’s dime, by taking advantage of a tragedy.” – said Artur Langu, a candidate running for city council on Ward 12 .

“People are still grieving and are in shock by this vicious attack. – Artur continued. Families and friends are mourning their loved ones. We are in shock and sorrow for the victims and their families. City councillors priority should have been to take care and support the victims and their families and not start pointing fingers so they seem like they are doing something.”

“By moving this motion and approving it the city Councillors have done nothing more but try to criminalize in a way legal gun owners , law-abiding citizens, who had nothing to do with this tragedy, nor any other unlawful shooting and told them we don’t want you around.”

“Legal gun owners need firearm permit from the RCMP, after they go through a safety training and background check, and to move a firearm they need to notify the authorities on the route that they will take to transport the firearm.”

“It is shameful that Councillors can take advantage of their position to pass these type of motions that seem purely as an election campaign.”

“Why didn’t the city council passed a motion to ban vans from Toronto when the van attack happened?”

“Would have been more logical if the motion was done at later time and had included and concentrated more on the restriction of the amount of guns purchased by gun owners. No one has the need to have an arsenal in their home.”

With crime on the rise and so many shootings that has been in Toronto no concrete measures have been taken by the city council.
